A total of 227 people have been killed and 1,128 others injured in the fighting between the UN-backed Libyan government and the eastern-based army in and around the capital Tripoli, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday.

"There have been 227 people killed and 1,128 wounded. More than 30,000 people have been displaced. The WHO and its partners are working to make sure that people who have fled their homes can access medical care," the WHO tweeted.

The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
