Reversing a decades-long trend of declining participation, the European Parliament elections - excluding the UK - climbed above 50 percent.

Jaume Dutch, spokesperson for the European Union's legislature, said Sunday the turnout estimate figure is now close to 51 percent for EU27, the highest in 20 years.

Sunday is the end of the four-day elections for the 28-member bloc, where 426 million people were eligible to vote for the 751 European Members of Parliament.
