At least 14 people were killed and 10 others wounded on Wednesday as two passenger minibuses collided on a highway south of Egypt's capital Cairo, the Egyptian Health Ministry said in a statement.

Once the accident took place on the Autostrad Road in Helwan city, the Health Ministry sent 12 equipped ambulances that moved the casualties to nearby hospitals, said the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed in the statement.

He pointed out that the injuries included suspected brain hemorrhage, basilar skull fracture and intra-abdominal bleeding, besides several cuts and fractures.

"All the injured are currently receiving necessary medical treatment," he added.

Egypt suffers a high rate of traffic accidents that kill thousands of people every year mostly due to the negligence of traffic rules.

The country's official statistics authority said in a recent report released on Tuesday that traffic accidents killed 3,747 people and injured about 14,000 others in Egypt in 2017.
