The Russian State Duma, the lower chamber of parliament, on Tuesday passed a bill suspending Russia's participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF).
The bill, submitted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposes to suspend the treaty signed between the former Soviet Union and the United States in 1987.
The bill must now be endorsed by the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, and then signed into law by President Putin.
The Russian president has the right to renew the treaty, the bill says.
Putin decided to suspend Russian participation in the INF in February in a mirrored response to the U.S. decision to pull out of it within six months beginning in February.
Moscow and Washington have accused each other of violating the agreement in recent years amid increasing tensions.
