Israeli former Prime Minister Ehud Barak announced on Wednesday that he is returning to politics and forming a new party to "defeat" incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's upcoming elections.

Barak told a press conference in Tel Aviv that Netanyahu's leadership "must be toppled," and accused Netanyahu of dragging Israel to new elections.

Barak, 77, served as the prime minister between 1999 and 2001. He also served as Netanyahu's defense minister before retiring from politics in 2013.

Israel's parliamentary elections will be held in September after Netanyahu failed to form a majority government coalition.
