Death toll reaches over 200 due to floods in India

The death toll in India's flood-affected states of Assam and Bihar has reached above 200, media reported on Saturday.

In the northeastern state of Assam, at least 80 people have lost their lives due to the calamity, it said. Several rivers including the Brahmaputra were flowing above the danger marks and the flood situation continued to remain grim in Assam's Kokrajhar and Nalbadhi.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, over 38 lakh (3.8 million) people were affected in 20 districts in Assam.

In the eastern state of Bihar, over 120 people have so far died.

Nearly 81 lakh (8.1 million) people have been affected in at least 12 districts.

Rivers such as Kosi, Budhee Gandak, Bagmati, Adhwara Samooh, Parmaan, Kamla Balaan and Mahananda have been flowing above the danger marks.

The reports said that 42 relief camps in Bihar are providing refuge to the flood-affected people. As many as 26 teams of National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Fund, 796 human force personnel and 125 motorboats are engaged in flood-affected areas of the state.
