Syria's rebel groups on Monday targeted the Russian-run Hmeimim air base in northwestern Syrian province of Latakia just as a tenuous cease-fire crumbled, according to the state news agency SANA.
The rebels in Idlib fired several shells on the Hmeimim air base, hitting its surrounding and causing big damage and human losses.
Hmeimim air base has been the target of Syrian rebels' drones, which are usually flown from the nearby rebel-held Idlib Province in northwestern Syria.
The legal status of the base is regulated by a treaty signed by Russia and Syria in August 2015. At the end of 2017, Russia said that it had decided to turn the base into a component of its permanent military contingent stationed in Syria.
Meanwhile, the targeting of the air base comes in light of the faltering cease-fire that went into force on evening of Aug. 1 in Idlib and ended on Monday because of the violations reported by both sides of the conflict.
The rebels in Idlib continued to fire on government areas in Latakia and the Syrian army responded by shelling the rebel targets, according to activists.
