Confirmed dengue death toll rises to 23 in Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi government has confirmed another five deaths from dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country since January to 23, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported Tuesday.

The deaths includes two in April, three in June, 15 in July and three in August.

On Aug. 1-6, according to the figure reported by the DGHS under the Ministry of Health, 11,451 more dengue cases were recorded after 16,253 people were infected with the mosquito-borne disease last month, which were more than the total number of patients in any past year.

The number of patients was 10,148 last year including 946 cases in July 2018 and 26 of them died.

A total of 2,348 fresh dengue cases including 1,284 in Dhaka were reported in the 24 hours till 8:00 a.m. local time Tuesday, the DGHS data showed.

The total number of dengue fever cases reported since the start of January reached 29,912.

Against such a grim situation, Bangladesh health authorities have strengthened measures to check breeding of mosquitoes and conduct anti-larval operations.
