Four people have been confirmed killed following an attack by an armed group who stormed a village in Nigeria's northern state of Katsina, according to local police on Monday.
The armed group also rustled at least four cattle during the attack in the village of Tsayau on Sunday, said Anaz Gezawa, the spokesman for the state's police.
Gezawa said the local residents had chased the attacking group into a thick forest to recover their stolen cattle.
A local source said those killed were hunters who engaged the armed group in a gunfight. Several others were injured during the gun duel, with the bandits escaping into the forest.
Bodies of the deceased were later recovered by other villagers who searched the forest.
Local police said they have launched an investigation into the incident and were on the trail of the attackers.
The attack came barely 24 hours after a directive was issued by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to troops not to spare bandits across the country while he was in Katsina, his state of origin.
Buhari told troops to be more spontaneous in restoring peace to the country, particularly in states troubled by the activities of armed groups.
