Road accident kills 7 in Malawi

Seven people were killed late Wednesday afternoon while three others sustained life-threatening injuries in a road accident in Malawi's central region district of Ntcheu, officials said Thursday.

A speeding freight liner truck loaded with bales of tobacco lost control and hit three other vehicles including a Toyota Hiace passenger commuter minibus, Police spokesperson for the district, Hastings Chigalu, confirmed the accident to local media. He said the injured passengers of the commuter minibus were rushed to the district's hospital.

"The driver of the truck lost control and hit three vehicles including the commuter minibus killing the seven on spot and injuring three in the process," said Chigalu.

He added that among those who died due to the impact, four are males and three females. Six were passengers from the passenger bus while the seventh is the driver of one of the vehicles that was hit by the truck.

In March, 17 people were killed while 25 were injured in a road accident in the same district when a truck ploughed into people at a roadside market called Kampepuza.
