Russian officials on Wednesday condemned the new U.S. sanctions against Russian law enforcement officers, saying retaliatory measures will follow.

"We consider the decisions (of the new sanctions) regarding representatives of the Russian law enforcement agencies absolutely unacceptable," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

He said the sanctions were the continuation of Washington's destructive policy towards U.S.-Russia relations and that Moscow will make an "adequate reaction."

While Peskov did not provide details of the retaliation, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday that Russia is likely to expand the list of U.S. citizens banned from entering Russia.

"They assume that we will yield to sanctions, but this will never happen," Ryabkov said, adding that if the United States abandons expanding its blacklist of Russians, Moscow will follow suit.

On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department imposed entry bans on two senior officers of the Russian Investigative Committee and their family members for allegedly torturing members of a religious group, which Russia's Supreme Court designated as an "extremist organization" in 2017.
