Two machinists were killed on Thursday when a pilot engine derailed inside a tunnel in Turkey's northwestern Bilecik province.
"Following the derailment, the engine was dragged for about 200 meters and hit the wall of the tunnel," Bilal Senturk, the governor of Bilecik, was quoted as saying by the NTV broadcaster.
The machinists were checking the high-speed tracks when the accident happened, Senturk said, adding the pilot engine exceeded the speed limit of 30 km per hour in that specific area.
The Istanbul-Konya and Istanbul-Ankara train services were suspended as a result of the derailment, local media reported.
In December last year, a high-speed train crashed into a pedestrian overpass after hitting a railway engine in Ankara, killing nine people and injuring 47 others.
