The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, on Sunday said the UN is expanding work to respond to the challenges posed by climate change.

"The UN is expanding our work to respond to climate related challenges."

"The UN Climate Security Mechanism is developing analytical and programmatic guidance and is strengthening partnerships with regional, national and local actors," said Guterres during the opening of the 33rd ordinary session of the assembly of the heads of state and government of the AU being held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The UN Secretary General said Africa which is the least responsible for climate disruption, yet among the worst to suffer will have a special focus in the global body's fight against the effects of climate change.

"Last year was devastating, with climate related disasters costing the lives of thousands of people, with hundreds of thousands displaced and millions made food insecure".

"Along with the destruction of cyclones Idai and Kenneth, there are numerous under-reported climate-linked crises from the Sahel to Zambia, from Kenya to Madagascar. A climate-related locust infestation is causing misery across various swathes of East Africa," Guterres told the AU gathering.

The UN Secretary General further said the global body had identified the Horn of Africa, Central Africa and Sahel region as top priority areas for UN's expanded role in responding to the challenge posed by climate change.
