Turkey on Sunday temporarily closed all its land border crossings with Iran over the COVID-19 cases in the neighboring country, a Turkish minister said.

"All transitions (from Iran to Turkey) are temporarily stopped," Turkish Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca told reporters.

But transitions from Turkey to Iran are still available, he noted.

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Koca said land and railway border gates with Iran would be closed as of 5:00 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) on Sunday over the rise of new coronavirus cases there.

He said the air traffic from Iran to Turkey would also be suspended from 8:00 p.m. local time (1700 GMT), while the departures from Turkey to Iran will continue.

The Turkish government decided to restrict border movements after 43 coronavirus cases were detected in Iran with eight deaths by Sunday, according to the Turkish minister.
