An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 hit the southern Philippines before dawn on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology said.
The institute said the offshore quake, which struck at 3:13 a.m. local time, hit at a depth of 130 kilometers, about 187 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town in Davao Occidental province.
The temblor, which was tectonic of origin, was also felt in the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, and General Santos City in the southern Philippines.
The institute said aftershocks are expected. However, it added that the tremor is not expected to cause damage or trigger a tsunami.
The Philippines has frequent seismic activities due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
