Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Thursday that the U.S.-Japan security treaty is a product of the Cold War, reiterating China's sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.

Zhao made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a question on a phone call between U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, which concerned China's Diaoyu Islands.

"The Diaoyu Island and its adjacent islets are China's inherent territory," Zhao said, adding that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan, born out of the Cold War, shall not be used to undermine the interests of any third party, let alone regional peace and stability.
