The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent reached 3,656,459 as of Sunday morning, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

According to the continental disease control and prevention agency's COVID-19 dashboard, the death toll related to the pandemic in Africa stood at 94,725 so far.

A total of 3,164,456 people infected with COVID-19 have recovered across the continent as of Sunday, the African Union (AU) Commission's healthcare agency disclosed.

The Southern Africa region is the most affected area in Africa in terms of the number of confirmed positive cases, followed by the Northern Africa region, according to the agency.

The most affected African countries in terms of the number of positive cases include South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Ethiopia, said the Africa CDC.

South Africa has reported the highest COVID-19-inflicted deaths in Africa, at 46,180 as of Sunday.

Meanwhile, the AU has emphasized that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic "is not just a severe health emergency, it is also a grave economic and social crisis."

The statement was made by Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa who is also the outgoing chairperson of the AU, during the 34th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU, which is held virtually Saturday and Sunday.

The South African President said the pandemic has deepened global inequality and threatens to set back progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

"As a continent, and as a global community, we are engaged in an unprecedented struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic," Ramaphosa said, adding the pandemic has caused great suffering and hardship across the African continent.
