Several bandits were killed in an ambush by troops after a criminal gang invaded a village in Nigeria's northern state of Kaduna, said an official on Wednesday.
Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security and home affairs in the state, said four hostages, including one woman and three children, were also rescued when the troops laid the ambush against the bandits in Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna on Tuesday.
The bandits used the abductees as a defense to retreat from the village of Ungwan Danko in the Birnin Gwari area which they earlier invaded.
Aruwan told reporters that troops, however, mobilized to the location, laid an ambush, and intercepted the bandits, cutting off their escape.
"In the ensuing firefight, several bandits were neutralized and others escaped with bullet wounds," he added.
Nigeria's northern region has witnessed a series of attacks by armed groups in recent months.
