The Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Liu Hongyang, on Friday donated two truckloads of medical supplies to Malawi's health sector, and cash towards "Let Girls Learn" initiative run by the country's First Lady, Monica Chakwera.

Presenting the donation to the First Lady at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Liu said the cash, approximately 30,000 U.S. dollars, is a donation from the Chinese Embassy while the medical supplies worth 50,000 dollars are a donation from his country's medical team working in Malawi.

"Today, on behalf of the Chinese Medical Team, I am donating another shipment of medical supplies, with a total value of more than 40 million Kwacha, and the supplies include 21 state-of-the-art hospital beds," he explained.

The ambassador said the donation towards the First Lady's "Let Girls Learn" initiative is a response to an appeal for support that Malawi's First Lady made to the Chinese Embassy through her Shaping Our Future Foundation (SOFF).

He pledged more support to Malawi in the areas of education and health, including the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that 300,000 China-made vaccines will arrive in Malawi within the month.

"China is a good brother, a good friend, and a good partner of Malawi. I would like to assure you that the Chinese Embassy in Malawi will facilitate more cooperation with Malawi through health care, education, and other fields," said the Chinese ambassador.

Receiving the donations, the Malawi First Lady described the gesture by the Chinese government as "an act of kindness and a reminder that humanity does not have boundaries".

She said the support towards the "Let Girls Learn" initiative will enable 120 needy girls to attain their secondary education in the next school year.

She added that the donated medical supplies will help in contributing towards the country's desired goal that every person in the country has access to outstanding health care.

The First Lady further said with the devastation that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused to the world, the most important thing that is needed is "a people with one heart for mankind" like the Chinese government is doing.

In November, the Chinese government, through its embassy in Malawi also donated a total of 245,000 dollars towards the presidential building project run by former President Joyce Banda aimed at reducing poverty.
