PYONGYANG, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Floods triggered by recent downpours have left eight people dead and over 16,250 homeless in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), official media reported Wednesday.

The DPRK has been suffering from heavy rains and flooding since the start of the rainy season last Wednesday, when a typhoon reached the country, the official KCNA news agency reported.

More than 650 houses were destroyed and nearly 3,870 others were submerged in the floodwaters, it said, adding that about 30 public buildings collapsed, long stretches of roads were destroyed and dozens of bridges were damaged.

In an "all-people drive" to recover from the disaster, officials across the country are visiting disaster-hit areas to evaluate the damage and take necessary measures, it said.

Rail traffic was temporarily suspended due to the downpour and strong rainstorm, according to the KCNA. Enditem
