Death toll from tropical storm Saola rises to 8 in Philippines

MANILA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from tropical storm Saola (local name Gener) rose to eight in the Philippines as the typhoon continues to bring heavy rains and flooding in various parts of the country, the government said Tuesday.

The number of missing persons is down from six to four, all fishermen. Two other people, initially reported as missing when their barge lost communication, have been rescued, said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.

A total of 44,982 families have been displaced and more than a thousand houses were damaged, it said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Saola will remain in the country's area of responsibility until Thursday. Enditem
