Roundup: Fighting continues across Syria while Assad says to eradicate "terrorism"
DAMASCUS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Incessant battles between armed rebels and government troops continued in a number of Syrian cities on Tuesday while embattled President Bashar al-Assad stressed the government's and the people's resolution to eradicate "terrorists" in the country.
The state news agency SANA said clashes took place Tuesday in Homs, Hama, Deir al-Zour, Hasaka and Aleppo provinces.
It said groups of "terrorists," who are fleeing from the armed forces in the city of Homs, committed on Tuesday a massacre against citizens at Jandar Resort in the countryside of Homs where many of the innocent people got killed.
Meanwhile, border guards in cooperation with authorities in Homs foiled an infiltration attempt by armed groups from the Lebanese territories at al-Armouta site in Talkalakh of Homs countryside and inflicted heavy losses upon the infiltrators, according to the SANA.
The agency also reported that an armed group fired missiles from inside the Lebanese territories on the site of Jisr Qmar crossing point to cover the infiltration attempt.
The agency said that the authorities killed and wounded many terrorists while the others fled into the Lebanese territories. The authorities also chased down the armed men in a number of neighborhoods of Homs and inflicted heavy losses upon them. The armed men had been stationing in the neighborhoods of al-Warsheh, Bab Hood, Bab Dreib and al-Khalidieh in Homs, said SANA.
In eastern Deir al-Zour, authorities clashed with an armed group which tried to attack law-enforcement forces in al-Mayadeen city, killing all its members.
In Aleppo, the authorities repelled last night an armed terrorist group that attacked the Traffic Department in the city, inflicting heavy losses upon its members.
SANA said that the armed group tried to infiltrate through Souq al-Hal road to target the Traffic Department but was confronted by the authorities.A clash erupted and resulted in killing and injuring the armed men, according to SANA.
On the opposition side, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the neighborhoods of Salahuddien, Seif al- Dawla, al-Sakhour, al-Frafra, Bab al-Hadid and Bab al-Nasr in the city of Aleppo have been under violent bombardment by government forces, who also clashed with rebel fighters at the entrances of the Salahuddien neighborhood. It said 12 civilians were killed in Aleppo Tuesday.
In Deir a-Zour, the Observatory said a child was killed by a sniper in the Deir Al-Ateek area, adding that a leader of the armed rebel fighters was killed by the shelling on the city Tuesday.
The Observatory also said four rebel fighters were killed in the countryside of Deir al-Zour after an attack on the al-Ward oil- field in the district of Dweir.
In southern Daraa province, violent clashes have been taking place between rebel fighters and regime forces in Busra al-Harir town, which led to tens of injuries, the destruction of two military vehicles and the deaths of at least four government forces.
Also, a civilian was killed in the Busra al-Harir town in Daraa by bombardment on the town, according to the Observatory.
However, the opposition's account couldn't be verified independently.
While the battles on ground are incessant, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stressed Tuesday that his government along with the Syrian people are determined to eradicate "terrorism" and " purge" the country of "terrorists."
Assad's remarks were made during his meeting with Saeed Jalili, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who arrived in Syria earlier on Tuesday to hold talks with Assad.
Jalili, for his side, contended that Syria is subject to foreign schemes rather than just an internal issue, stressing that Iran will not allow the external plots to break Syria.
Sources told Xinhua that among the topics of their meeting is the rescuing of the 48 Iranian pilgrims, who were snatched by armed rebels in Damascus on Saturday.
Iran has been the most important regional ally to the Syrian administration in the 17-months-old crisis.
Iran has held Turkey and the Gulf states responsible for the kidnapping of the Iranians due to their support to the armed rebels, who kidnapped the pilgrims and said they are Iranian republican guards. The abductors' claim was denied by the Iranian government.
The Iranians and the Shiite people have been recently targeted in Syria by the Sunni-dominated opposition fighters, who believe that Iran is backing the Assad leadership. Enditem
