LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A modest tremor jolted the southern part of the U.S. state of California late Tuesday night, but was unlikely to cause much damage.
The magnitude 4.4 quake struck at 11:23 p.m. local time (0623 GMT Wednesday), with the epicenter located some 46 km east of downtown Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in the quake, which was felt by residents living in a wide swath of area from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach.
The region has been hit by frequent moderate earthquakes over the years. Enditem
