GENEVA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- An United Nations (UN) human rights expert on Thursday called on all Syrian parties in conflict to protect and assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) and avoid further forced internal displacement.

Chaloka Beyani, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, expressed deep concern about the situation of the estimated 1.5 million people internally displaced by the armed conflict in Syria.

He urged Syrian government to allow full and unrestricted access to IDPs by humanitarian actors so that they are able to reach those in need, and to continue to secure safe spaces for IDPs.

Beyani also called on the opposition forces and other armed groups to respect these spaces and allow humanitarian actors free and unhindered access to areas in which they operate.

Meanwhile, Marianne Gasser, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Syria urged on the same day that the parties to the conflict should "take every feasible measure to spare the civilian population the effects of the fighting."

The ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have assisted more than 125,000 people affected by violence in several parts of Syria, including Aleppo over the past three weeks. Enditem
