MOSCOW, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed condolences to his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over the losses of life inflicted by two strong earthquakes on Saturday, the Kremlin press service said Sunday.

Putin expressed his profound sympathy to the victims of the disaster, saying that Russia is ready to provide necessary support and aid to the quake-hit country, according to the Kremlin.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked northwestern Iran on Saturday. The temblor has killed at least 300 people and injured over 2,000 others, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Thousands of people are staying outdoor due to house damage or fear of aftershocks. At least 35 aftershocks had occurred in the region.

Being crossed by several major fault lines, Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. Enditem
