MADRID, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed when attempting to extinguish a forest fire in Alicante, eastern Spain on Sunday, local media reported on Monday, saying one of the them was a firefighter.

It added another two people were hospitalized due to injuries caused by the fire.

The fire broke out on Sunday in Torremanzanas, a village of 802 inhabitants located in the center of Alicante province.

Five pumpers, five fire vehicles, 18 aircraft and a section of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) were deployed to the scene.

About 130 children were evacuated from a summer camp as a preventive measure.

Spain currently has several active fires. One of the most serious occurred on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. Over 4,000 people have been evacuated due to the fire, which is still out of control and has caused serious ecological damages.

Spain has experienced a heat wave these days, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the country, making fire fighting an arduous task. Enditem
