MONTEVIDEO, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan President Jose Mujica on Friday called on the Latin American countries to build common policies and promote regional unity.

The Latin American countries should make an effort "to be more and more united, because the world is organizing in giant blocs and we have to be in these blocs to be able to discuss," Mujica told local radio station Montecarlo.

"We need a common policy to support the region. I am convinced that this is possible," he added, reaffirming Uruguay's will to strengthen ties with the Pacific countries in South America.

The president said that his mission "is to monitor Brazil and Argentina to approach the Pacific countries in order to make Latin American countries get stronger in the future as a whole."

The South American Pacific coast countries include Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile. Enditem
