Profile: Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will pay his first state visit to China from Tuesday to Thursday at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

Born in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya on Aug. 20, 1951, Morsi received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in engineering from Cairo University. He obtained a doctorate in the same field from the University of Southern California of the U.S.

Morsi used to teach at Zagazig University in Zagazig city, north of Cairo.

He was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau. He served as a member of parliament from 2000 to 2005. In April 2011, Morsi was elected chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.

On June 24, 2012, Morsi was declared the winner in the first presidential election after the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak. After his election, Morsi resigned as chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party. Enditem
