Texas State opens shelter for possible evacuees from Louisiana as Hurricane Isaac makes landfalls

HOUSTON, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. state of Texas has opened a shelter for possible evacuees from neighboring Louisiana state after Hurricane Isaac made landfalls in southeastern Louisiana Tuesday.

According to local TV channel ABC13, volunteers with the American Red Cross were ready on Tuesday at a shelter in DeSoto, a city in Dallas County in north Texas.

Meanwhile, Rick Perry, governor of Texas, has placed state and local emergency management officials on alert. He also activated a disaster district committee in Beaumont, a city in Jefferson County, Texas to help those who may evacuate from neighboring Louisiana.

In Austin, capital of Texas, the lone star state's emergency operations center continues to monitor Hurricane Isaac, which has left more than 203,000 homes and businesses in southeastern Louisiana without power.

In Texas, federal emergency officials have started staging supplies in neighboring Louisiana in preparation for Hurricane Isaac. The regional Federal Emergency Management Agency office in Denton, a city in Denton County, Texas has set up an operations center in Baton Rouge, capital of Louisiana.

Emergency response items such as meals, water, cots, blankets and hygiene kits have been placed at various points in the state which is hit by Hurricane Isaac. Enditem
