Interview: China opens to work with any country for Pacific development: Vice FM
RAROTONGA, Cook Islands, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China is open to work with any country in helping to bring stability and prosperity to the Pacific islands region, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said Wednesday.
Speaking ahead of the launch of a three-way partnership to bring a water supply project to the Cook Islands with New Zealand, Cui said China had much to offer the developing nations of the Pacific and a long tradition of giving assistance to other developing countries.
"For one thing, maybe we have the appropriate technology which could be applied to the island countries," he said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.
"We have our own development experience what we have learned in our own country could be useful for the island countries as well," he said.
"And most importantly both China and the island countries are developing countries. We do share a lot of common challenges and that is a very good political basis for such cooperation," he added.
China was very happy see that New Zealand was the first developed nation to enter an assistance partnership with China, he said.
"New Zealand has had a number of firsts, including being the first developed country to conclude free-trade arrangements with China, so we're happy for the three-party cooperation New Zealand is again the first developed country," said Cui.
"We are ready and we are open to explore further ways of expanding such cooperation in the future, but this will have to be done on a case by case basis in a gradual way because each case will be different," he said.
"We have to assess the actual needs of the recipient countries, the comparative advantages of each party and the feasibility for each party."
China would continue its assistance to help Pacific island countries build their capabilities, he said.
"We will continue to be a good friend, a good partner of the island countries. We will continue to work for stability and prosperity in this region. We will continue to work with other members of the international community for their common interests, " said Cui. Enditem
