KIEV, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Six miners were injured in a coal mine explosion in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk province late Thursday, authorities reported Friday.

The explosion took place at 10 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) 986 meters below the surface when a large amount of methane gas was ignited at the Stakhanov mine in a town in the east part of the province, the Ministry of Emergencies said.

The six injured were taken to hospital, with three of them suffering burns and the rest suffering gas poisoning, the report said.

Operations at the mine were suspended.

Mine accidents happen repeatedly in Ukraine due to outdated equipment and loose safety regulations. Enditem
