Rihanna, One Direction dominate 29th MTV video awards

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. R&B singer Rihanna and British boy band One Direction stole the show at the 29th annual MTV Video Music Awards Thursday, prevailing with the much-coveted awards at a night characterized by surprises.
Rihanna, together with Canadian rapper Drake had led the pack with five nominations apiece in the leadup to the televised show, walked away with only one of them, Video of the Year, for "We Found Love," beating favorite Gotye for "Somebody That I Used to Know."
This is the second triumph for Rihanna whose first win was in 2007 for "Umbrella."
She is only the second artist to win this category twice, following Eminem, who won for "The Real Slim Shady" (2000) and "Without Me" (2002).
Drake also nabbed a single award, the Best Hip-Hop Video, for "HYFR" featuring Lil Wayne.
The biggest winner of the night is One Direction, which took home three awards including Best New Artist, voted on live throughout the show, Best Pop Video and the new fan-voted social media category, Most Share-Worthy Video, both for "What Makes You Beautiful."
Nicki Minaj defeated Rihanna and Kata Perry to win for "Starships," pulling off a big upset of the night. It's her first win and second nomination in the category.
Chris Brown, Rihanna's former boyfriend, and M.I.A. both walked away with two Moonmen.
Brown, who only prevailed at the awards show four years ago, won Best Male Video for "Turn Up the Music." He pulled an upset against favorite Justin Bieber and Drake. M.I.A. won for Best Direction and Best Cinematography for "Bad Girls."
Beyonce, who was considered a favorite for the show, managed to fetch Best Editing for "Countdown," although she was empty-handed in the match for Female Video.
The show was broadcast live during the 8 and 10 p.m. which was an hour earlier than usual so as not to compete with U.S. President Barak Obama's acceptance speech for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
The winners for the 29th annual VMA's were selected in online voting by fans. Last year's big winner was Katy Perry, who won three prizes, including video of the year.
Honoring the best music videos, the first MTV Video Music Award ceremony was held in 1984 in New York. Enditem
