NICOSIA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Friday called on his European colleagues meeting in Cyprus to deal with what he called a humanitarian crisis resulting from the fighting in Syria.
In remarks to the press before the informal EU foreign ministers' meeting at a mountainous tourist resort, Hague said it is necessary EU offers its support to countries under pressure because of the influx of refugees, such as Turkey, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon.
The meeting, co-chaired by EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, is to enter into detailed discussion on Syria Saturday, after discussing water usage issues and education.
Hague revealed that Britain has recently increased to a very large degree its support to forces fighting President Bashar al-Assad's army by sending "non-military" material, such as communication equipment.
Britain recently refused to comment on reports by the British press that its military bases in Cyprus offer intelligence assistance to anti-Assad forces.
Hague said it is very important to promote a political solution to the problem in Syria by forming a transitional government. Enditem
