Tunisia discusses with U.S. on release of detainees held in Guantanamo Bay
TUNIS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian and United States officials on Tuesday pledged cooperation and coordination in dealing with the issue of detained Tunisians in Guantanamo Bay, the official TAP press agency reported.
Hedi Ben Abbes, secretary of state in charge of American and Asian affairs in the Tunisian Foreign Affairs Ministry, and visiting Daniel Fried, the U.S. special envoy in charge of the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba, discussed on Tuesday the liberation of five Tunisians held for years in Guantanamo Bay, TAP said.
Both sides stressed the need for cooperation on this issue while underscoring their commitment to continuous efforts until the final liberation of the Tunisian detainees, according to the report.
The visit of the U.S. envoy follows the one in early July by the Tunisian secretary of state to the detention camp.
In a press conference given following his return from Cuba, Abbes said that the detainees, some of whom have spent 10 years in the camp, would be released at the end of 2012. Enditem
