COPENHAGEN, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Police said here Wednesday they are investigating a brutal murder committed in plain view on a street in downtown Copenhagen.

The victim, a 48-year-old man of Pakistani ethnicity, was killed by a single shot to the head, at close range, from a nine-millimeter weapon early Wednesday in the borough of Vesterbro, police said.

Witnesses on the scene told Danish news agency Ritzau they heard a single shot fired on the street sometime after midnight.

Others said to Danish news website Ekstrabladet.dk that the victim was shot in the neck following a quarrel with two persons.

Police said to Ritzau they are working on the theory that only one suspect is involved, and are searching for a well-built, tall, "foreign man" around 25 years old, in connection with the crime.

A kiosk located near the crime scene will be investigated later Wednesday, given that the victim is in some way connected to the shop, police added. Several Danish media said the victim was a kiosk owner, but police would not confirm that.

While a cartridge and bullet were recovered at the scene, the weapon used in the crime has not yet been recovered, a police investigator involved in the case told Ritzau.

The crime scene is currently cordoned off as forensics units conduct their investigations, as police interview witnesses and as an autopsy on the dead man is expected to be carried out on the spot.

According to Danish news website Politiken.dk, the killing could point to internal turmoil in the network that exists among kiosk owners of Pakistani origin in Copenhagen.

"We are not excluding anything. This is one of the many theories we are working on, but at this point in the investigation we do not have anything concrete. This could also be a private dispute," Copenhagen Police's central investigation director Jan Hoeier Mogensen was quoted by Politiken.dk as saying.

A 26-year-old Pakistani kiosk-owner was murdered in 1996 following quarrels within the kiosk network, while a 24-year-old of the same ethnic origin was killed last year for similar reasons, the news website said. Enditem
