MADRID, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The total number of deaths caused by the heavy rainfall to hit the south-east of Spain has risen to six on Friday.

The first victim is a woman who died when the river Guadalahorce broke its banks close to the town of Alora, north of Malaga. 12 other people, including the victim's husband were rescued by emergency services in the same incident.

The worst tragedy took place in the province of Murcia, where three people, including a nine-year-old girl died after a bridge on the A7 motorway collapsed as a result of the torrential rain.

The Spanish Military's Emergency Unit has been called to Alora where there is widespread damage, while some 5,000 people have been evacuated due to the heavy rain that is falling in the south of the country

The collapse of the bridge on the A7 has cut communications between Murcia and Almeria, while the city of Lorca, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2011, has also suffered extensive flooding. TV images from Almeria showed a view of the devastation with cars piled on top of each other and numerous homes and garages flooded. Enditem
