Iceland calls for diplomacy in Middle East; tells Israel "Don't bomb Iran"

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Iceland on Saturday called for diplomatic solutions to growing tensions between Israel and Iran over Teheran's nuclear program, as well as the continued dispute between Israel and Palestine.

The comments came from Iceland's foreign minister, Ossur Skarphyinsson, at the General Debate of the 67th session of the General Assembly, which opened here on Tuesday.

In response to the speech of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made here on Thursday, he said, "Don't bomb Iran. Don' t start another war in the middle east."

And speaking to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he implored, "Don't build a bomb."

Israel and Western countries accuse Iran of clandestinely pursuing nuclear weapons, although the Islamic republic insists on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

"Let diplomacy work, not rabblerousing or fearmongering. Let's work for peace together," he said.

The minister also said, "the situation in Palestine is unacceptable to anyone who respects human dignity," noting that a recent UN report warned Gaza may not be a livable place by 2020.

The best way to ensure peace is "a two-state solution that would not only be to the benefit of the Palestinians, but to the Israeli people as well," he said. Enditem
