KIEV, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday emphasized the need to develop renewable energy technologies in order to improve the country's environment.

"The development of renewable energy is central to overall energy policy in Ukraine," Yanukovych said at the opening ceremony of a wind energy farm in Zaporozhye region in the county's south.

The Botievska wind energy farm, which is expected to produce about 500 mega watts of electricity every year, will contribute to Ukraine's renewable energy progress and environmental improvement, Yanukovych said.

The president stressed that renewable energy upgrading is a large part of Ukraine's modernization.

Ukraine aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix to 15 percent by 2015 from the current 3 percent. Enditem
