MANAGUA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nicaragua attaches great importance to nutrition and food security, and is the only Latin American country that has made progress in this regard in the past two years, a senior UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official said Tuesday.

Marking World Food Day Tuesday, FAO regional representative Gero Vaagt said in a television program that the "FAO uses a 'traffic-light system' in its report on food security" and "Nicaragua has gotten the 'green light'."

"That is why we have full confidence that it will reach the UN Millennium Development Goals," said Vaagt, referring to the eight goals set in 2000 to be achieved by 2015.

The FAO is supporting the creation of small family and school vegetable gardens in Nicaraguan towns, in a bid to bolster nutrition, said Vaagt, who was wrapping up his mission in Nicaragua. Enditem
