The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will deploy a team on board United Nations vessels carrying food to Africa to protect them from Somali pirates, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

The Philippine government's decision to send a PCG team was in response to the European Union Naval Force's (EUNAVFOR) request for governments to contribute naval and other assets for counter- piracy operations.

The PCG will deploy a team from its Special Operations Group as Vessel Protection Detachment to help guard the UN's World Food Program-chartered vessels .

Enrique Manalo, the Philippines' envoy to United Kingdom, informed EUNAVFOR officials of the government's decision in a meeting held in London last week.

EUNAVFOR is the European Union's naval task force which seeks to ensure the safe passage for ships amid rampant acts of piracy and hijacking off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden. Endi
