Hurricane Sandy kills 20 in Haiti

Five members of one family and other six people died in southern Haiti, raising the death toll from hurricane Sandy to 20, local authorities said Friday.

A mother and her four children died when their home was destroyed by a landslide in Grand-Goave city, 48 km southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince, said Haiti's Civil Protection Agency.

Congressman Gandy Dorfeuille confirmed the death of two people and many plantations and roads were damaged in Saint-Louis zone.

Four other people were found dead in Grand-Anse, Dame-Marie and Moron, said Haiti Press Network.

Interior and Territory Minister Ronsard Saint-Cyr said at least nine people had died until Thursday, while 10,000 more had been displaced and massive public and private infrastructure devastated.

The Cuban government on Friday mobilized food, basic materials, medical and technical brigades to support victims in its eastern regions as Sandy left 11 people dead and destroyed homes, schools and hospitals, and caused power outages.
