Myanmar has projected to build an airport in the Yanbye Island, western Rakhine State, as part of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Project, local media reported Thursday.
In an initial consultation meeting held recently in Yangon, the Japanese company of Nippon Koei was tasked to take up the project, said the 7-Day News.
Kyaukphyu, a major town of Rakhine State, is located on the northwestern corner of the Yanbye Island, also known as the Ramree Island, an island off Rakhine facing the Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, Myanmar is offering open tender for investment in development of the Kyaukphyu SEZ, the third planned SEZ project in the country, according to the Kyaukphyu SEZ project administration.
The Kyaukphyu SEZ project will include an oil wharf, airport, highway bus terminal, residential quarters and recreation centers.
With the consent of local inhabitants, the tender for the Kyaukphyu SEZ project, which includes two plots in the zone -- 607- 810 hectares and 1,215-2,025 hectares respectively, will be called after a conceptual plan is jointly drawn with the civil society and the tender will be done in a transparent manner, giving priority to local people and then foreign investors, the Kyaukphyu SEZ Project Administration Committee disclosed.
The Kyaukphyu SEZ lies between Kyaukphyu and the Yanbye Island and at present, the administration committee is cooperating with Japan's Nippon Koei Company in designating the project area, assessing the cost of availability of electricity through gas turbines, and laying down the master plan.
The Kyaukphyu SEZ is the third zone of its kind being planned after Thilawa and Dawei. Development of the Thilawa SEZ in Yangon mainly involves Japanese investors, while that of the Dawei SEZ in southern Tanintharyi region by Thai entrepreneurs. Endi
