The Syrian army repulsed an attack by some rebels storming a military airport in the northern province of Idlib, a pro-government radio said Saturday, as activists reported intense clashes around the crucial airbase.

Scores of armed men were killed Saturday when attacking Taftanas military airport in Idlib, the pro-government Sham FM radio said, adding that many of the assailants' gears and vehicles were destroyed by the army.

Meanwhile, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that intense clashes are underway in the surrounding area of Taftanas airport.

The armed rebels have been attempting to seize the airport in the hope of deterring the air forces' strikes on the rebel-held areas in the north, such as those in Idlib and Aleppo.

Warnings of an imminent attack on the airport were posted on Facebook by some pro-government activists in that area, telling the army to get prepared.

The rebels were reported to have taken control of Saraqb, a crucial northern town near idlib, killing in the process at least 28 soldiers and prompting a UN humanitarian panel to condemn the act as a war crime. Endi
