Eight people were killed and 12 others injured in an ambush by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector in Sudan's South Kordofan State, Khartoum's Al-Sudani daily reported Thursday.

Eight people were killed and 12 others injured in an ambush by the SPLM/northern sector in Hajar Jawad area between Al-Dalanj and Kadogli towns in South Kordofan State, the report said.

"The SPLM/northern sector targeted the road linking Al-Dalanj and Kadogli towns," the paper quoted local official Mussa Younis as saying, noting that the rebel attack was meant to block the road between the two towns.

He said the wounded people were transferred to Al-Dalanj hospital, while the dead were buried amid citizens' wrath at the SPLM/northern sector.

He added that the Sudanese army managed to repulse the rebels and opened the road within two hours.

South Kordofan has been witnessing clashes between the Sudanese army and the SPLM rebels since June 2011.

Sudan is accusing South Sudan of supporting the rebel group, which is fighting the Sudanese army in South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas. Sudan refuses to negotiate with the SPLM/northern sector until it breaks links with South Sudan, while the South Sudanese government denies having any connections with the rebel movement in Sudan.

In September, Sudan and South Sudan signed a cooperation agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, including an item banning both countries from supporting the armed rebel groups in the other country. Endi
