Australia's digital economy grew considerably in the 12 month to June 2012, helped by increased online shopping, social networking and smart phone ownership, according to research released on Thursday by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The ACMA's report showed that 7.8 million Australians participated in online shopping activities during June 2012, up 27 percent, compared to the figures a year ago.
In the same period, Facebook users in Australia reached 11.36 million, with 9.67 million Australians using YouTube and 12.27 million Australian accessing online news sites. According to the report, nearly three-quarters of Australian adults believe the Internet has improved their daily lives.
About one third of Australians aged 14 years and older uses the Internet via their mobile phone, a 52 percent rise in the 12 month to June 2012.
"Going online is about getting things done no matter where you are," ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman said in a statement.
"Being able to access information, shop, bank, and stay in touch with friends at any time is becoming easier and easier to do. "
"What's more, most Australians see themselves as pretty savvy in using the Internet, with almost two-thirds confident they have the skills necessary to do everything they want to do online," he added. Endi
