Pilots and cabin crew members from the Mozambique Airlines company LAM started a strike on Sunday in Maputo as they had previously announced their interest of striking if their demands of salary improvement were not observed.

According to a source from the staff involving in the strike, Ercilia Nhampossa, three flights have been cancelled whether scheduled to the northern city of Lichinga, on to Nairobi, capital of Kenya, Xinhua learned.

The source said the authorities of the company had initially promised verbally to agree with the demands of the pilots and cabin crew but it later changed position and said only by January they would discuss the terms of disagreement.

LAM authorities have requested support from a team of South Africa that arrived in Maputo on Saturday, but the staff said that this is an illegal option because the South Africa crew doesn't have training to fly using national airplanes.

Marlene Manave, LAM administrator, said on Friday that no flights would be compromised on Sunday and that the intention of staff to strike was illegal however there was always room for dialogue.

The striking staff also demand for insurance to the cabin crew members. Endi
