Chinese network equipment provider Huawei has finished modernizing Philippine Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart)'s mobile network in the central and southern Philippines, the telco announced in a statement Saturday.

Huawei informed Smart it has successfully completed the 90-day post-modernization observation period from July to September 2012 as part of the telco's acceptance process.

Using industry-standard "Drive Test Tools", the supplier conducted a series of tests during period to ensure that Smart's mobile network complies with key performance indices (KPIs) set by local regulatory institutions, according to Smart Technology Services Division Head Mar G. Tamayo. "The criteria are the same as those used by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) when conducting drive tests," he added. "The KPIs are also consistent with global benchmark standards."

So far, Huawei's optimization engineers noted that the modernized VisMin (Visayas and Mindanao) network exceeded the standards and requirements in all areas where the tests were conducted. "Huawei has fulfilled its end in helping Smart build the Philippines most advanced mobile network," Tamayo noted.

The Chinese multinational Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is currently the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world. Headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, it hauls in 20 billion U.S. dollars revenues and operates in over 140 countries.

Smart has a total of 50.9 million subscribers on its GSM network as of end-June 2012. The telco Has introduced world-first wireless data services, such as Smart Money, Smart Load, Smart Padala and the Netphone in the country. Endi
