Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos on Tuesday sent an envoy to his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni over the fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A State House statement issued here said that the visiting Angola Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Manuel Augusto, met Museveni at State House, to discuss ongoing efforts to pacify eastern DRC.

The statement did not give details of the meeting but said Augusto is on a visit in the region to make consultations with regional leaders regarding the situation and developments in eastern DRC.

The Angolan envoy has so far met with the leaders of Rwanda, the Republic of Congo and DRC.

Uganda as the chair of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, a regional body bringing together 11 member countries, has since July been mediating to help end the fighting.

Fighting in eastern DRC between M23 rebels and government troops has left over 475,000 people internally displaced and over 75,000 others fleeing to neighboring Rwanda and Uganda.

Regional leaders meeting here on Saturday urged the rebel group to pull out of Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, DRC.

The rebels at a meeting in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Monday night agreed to pull out of the town starting Nov. 27. Endi
