Six members of the rebel Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) were killed while launching an attack early Tuesday, the military said.

The FDLR linked to the 1994 Rwanda massacre has been reportedly holed up in the eastern part of the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the Rwandan army spokesman, Joseph Nzabamwita, the rebels entered Rwanda and attacked the villages of Cyanzarwe and Bugeshi, killing one civilian and injuring three others.

"The rebels attacked at dawn. The Rwanda Defense Forces kill six rebels and captured two. The rebel shot and killed one civilian and injured three who are now at Bugeshi health center," said Nzabamwita.

The Rwandan Defense Forces contained the attack and most of the rebels fled back into the DRC, according to the spokesman. Endi
