The Czech senate on Thursday approved UN and European Union (EU) conventions against corruption involving officials and on the protection of the European community's financial interests.

Several documents related to combating the fraudulent drawing of European subsidies were also approved. Under the convention, a fraud is newly defined not only as a deliberate action but also as a result of neglect.

The EU anti-corruption convention harmonises anti-corruption legislation of member countries and defines passive and active corruption by officials. The UN convention is an agreement on more effective promotion of measures preventing and fighting corruption and on support to international cooperation in this sphere.

The conventions still need to be passed by the other house of Czech parliament, the chamber of deputies. Endi
